LOVE Portraits Project

by TIE the STRINGS

ポートレート スナップ写真

Journey to the world. To find the answer.

What is a portrait?

What is a photo?

The journey to find the answer,

Love Portraits Project,

A project to deliver portraits from TIE the STRINGS to the world.

People who live in the land, people who visit it, and various tribes.

An experimental project that shoots people with diverse values and lifestyles at once, what wonderful encounters are ahead, what is a photograph, what is a portrait is.

Photos taken on a mobile phone with friends on a daily basis, casual snaps taken by a family when they go on a trip, photos seen in magazines and advertisements, and many photos that they see on SNS almost every day.

There are no days when you don't see a photo.

What is such a photograph?

When you look at various people from all over the world through the viewfinder and capture the moment, how is the story behind it expressed?

On a long journey to find the answer.

It is an endless project that travels around the world and seeks new encounters.

Artist Statement

My work is an ongoing inquiry into what a portrait can be.

To photograph a person is not to define them.
It is to remain with what emerges in their presence.

Moving between different cities, cultures, and lives,
I focus on the space that forms between myself and the subject—
before words, before interpretation.

A portrait, for me, is not a fixed image of identity,
but a condition shaped by distance, time, and awareness.

The act of photographing is a process of relation.
Sometimes brief, sometimes sustained, but always shifting.

What appears in the image is not a story, nor an explanation.

It is a trace of an encounter—
something that resists completion.

These works do not seek to describe who someone is.
They exist in the space between seeing and being seen,

where presence becomes uncertain, and meaning remains open.
